There is a ‘real possibility’ that Chelsea will attempt to sign Moises Caicedo in January while Liverpool have chosen not to ‘progress anything’ just yet, according to a respected journalist.
The Blues are extremely active in the current transfer market with Graham Potter’s side already completing deals for Molde’s David Datro Fofana, Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix and Vasco da Gama’s Andrey Santos.
And that looks unlikely to be the end of their winter transfer activity with the signing of Felix reportedly not impacting their interest in Borussia Monchengladbach striker Marcus Thuram, while they are apparently competing with Arsenal for Shakhtar Donetsk winger Mykhaylo Mudryk.
CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs insists that Brighton midfielder Caicedo could also be a possibility in this window with any move from Chelsea or Liverpool expected later on in the transfer window.
Jacobs wrote on Twitter: “More on Moises Caicedo. A real possibility Chelsea move. Brighton CEO Paul Barber told me no offers received to date, and Brighton don’t want any high-profile January outgoings, but added he ‘understands’ if opportunities arise. Caicedo firmly on Chelsea radar, as revealed in December.
“Brighton more likely to engage on Caicedo than Alexis Mac Allister. This is due to Caicedo changing agents, preparing for a move, and because suitors see value in Ecuadorian midfielder, even at £70m. Barber says ‘£42m would only get his laces’ giving a clue as to Caicedo’s price.
“Mac Allister only signed a new deal before the World Cup and says he’s in ‘no rush’ to leave. Brighton also have a club option to extend his 2025 deal by a year. Brighton valuation for Mac Allister is now significantly higher than clubs looking at him before World Cup wish to pay.
“Told most monitoring Mac Allister before Qatar valued him at £25-30m. Brighton would expect that at least doubled. They’d basically want around what Chelsea paid for Marc Cucurella (£62m). Barber explains (see article below) how, and as importantly when, Brighton value players.
“As for Caicedo, understand his new agents (Epic Sports) don’t officially start until January 18th, so should anything occur this month it will likely be quite late in the window. Doing a deal now right now would be messy. There are multiple agents still claiming a cut.
“Liverpool do really like Caicedo, and have a historical interest, but they didn’t move for him at Independiente del Valle due to unwanted costs away from the low fee.
“As previously reported, Liverpool have not placed a bid this month. Chelsea more likely to be the ones who meet Brighton’s valuation in January. Summer perhaps a different story.
“Caicedo himself doesn’t have a sole preference (despite the social media frenzy via a recent liked post on Liverpool). He’d be equally keen to reunite with Graham Potter or work under Jurgen Klopp, if Liverpool chose to progress anything. Right now they haven’t.
“But Caicedo’s desire is to play Champions League and big advantage of summer move is he’ll know who has it. Brighton are also on course to better last season’s EPL finish, and perhaps challenge for Europe, so the club would only consider a Caicedo exit on their terms.
“Final point: Brighton haven’t ‘reduced’ Caicedo fee in the market. Definitely no cut-price sale on the cards. Internally, he was never valued at £85m. Barber says Brighton don’t tend to pre-value players they’d rather keep before interest, especially in a quick January window.”
