Revealed: Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp's match winning half-time team talk against Burnley

Xherdan Shaqiri has revealed how Jurgen Klopp's half-time plea for a more forward-thinking approach helped Liverpool to a 3-1 win at Burnley on Wednesday evening.

The Reds returned to the Turf Moor dressing room having mustered just four shots in a goalless opening 45 minutes as the physical hosts successfully disrupted their rhythm.

But they were much improved in the second period, despite the fact it was Burnley who kickstarted the scoring from a set-piece through Jack Cork.

And they ended the half having scored three goals from 14 shots to complete a fine comeback for which Shaqiri, who scored the visitors' third at the end of fine counterattack, credits the manager's team talk.

The Swiss said: “He just said we have to be more in the game, more lively in the game, and to win the ball more because a lot times we played not forward but back.

"We weren't exactly perfect to get on the ball but in the second half we did better and we managed the game very well and then we scored three goals."

Klopp made seven changes to the line-up that claimed a dramatic weekend win over Everton as his side turned their attentions to the Clarets, with the likes of Divock Origi and Alberto Moreno receiving rare starts.

Shaqiri admits it took those who have not featured regularly some time to grow into the game, though he was pleased that they ultimately contributed to a good show of strength in depth.

He continued: "It was a very important game, the coach said that to us. It gave a lot of players confidence to play this game and we managed it well.

"Obviously it is not simple for the other players who did not play for a long time so in the first half they needed time to come into the game.

"But after that we managed it well and you can see we have a very strong team where everyone can play in the game."

Shaqiri was also happy to be given the whole 90 minutes, even as Klopp brought in Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino in a bid to turn the game on its head.

He added: “You saw at the end of the game that I could sprint to the goal and try to score. He wants me to get on the ball and I tried a few times but it was not perfect [or] what the coach wanted.

"We played very well in the second half and it was important to manage the game, retain ball possession, stay brave and wait for our chances and be clinical in front of goal and we did that."
