When the statue of Cristiano Ronaldo was revealed at an airport in the Portuguese town of Funchal, social media went into meltdown.
The airport had been named after the Real Madrid superstar, however, the statue to go with the award was fairly...horrifying, to say the least. Yes, it does look a lot like Niall Quinn. Now, however, it has been revealed what detail Ronaldo wants to be altered.
The sculptor, Emanuel Santos, speaking on the programme ‘Que t’hi judges?’, as per Sport, says the Portuguese international asked him to “take away the wrinkles under the left eye so it looks younger”.
Santos had previously said that Ronaldo had given him the seal of approval before the unveiling and stated that it is simply impossible to please everyone.
“It's impossible to please the Greeks and the Trojans. Not even Jesus pleased everyone,” he explained to Globo Esparto.
“This is a matter of taste, it's not as simple as it seems. I have seen the work of great artists that follow this parameter. What matters is the impact this work generated.
"There is always the possibility of producing something that looks different, I was already prepared for all of that. I used some photos of Cristiano Ronaldo that I found on the internet as a base, not one photo specifically. I put the photos by my side and started working on the bust.”
At least Ronaldo accepted the statue with good humour and if Santos can make the Los Blancos star look a tad younger, everyone's a winner. Well, not really.
