Rhys Carr said he is "so proud” of Coventry City’s players after they battled back from two goals down at Championship leaders Sunderland to earn a hard-fought draw at the Stadium of Light.

The Sky Blues were poor in a dreadful first 45 minutes and found themselves two down before the break as a result of stunning goals from Wilson Isidor and Dennis Cirkin. But the visitors battled back in the second half with Haji Wright drilling home just after the hour before Jack Rudoni got on the end of a Tatsuhiro Sakamoto cross to head home the equaliser six minutes from the end of normal time.

“We spoke to the players at half-time and made some tactical tweaks, spoke about the character that was going to be needed, and I am so proud and pleased and happy for the group of players in there that they showed in the second half, which was fantastic,” said Carr, reflecting on the 2-2 draw and his first game as interim head coach.

“It was certainly a game of two halves. Would we have wanted to play both halves the way we played the second? Of course we would, but we have come away from home, played the team at the top of the league and it is a pleasing comeback.”

Reflecting on the goals, he added: “I must admit I had to ask in the dressing room who scored the second because there were so many bodies in the box there and commotion. But we asked Tatsu to get balls in the box and asked players to get themselves on the area as well, which obviously Rudi did really well.

“I thought Haji was outstanding today, I really did, and I think he’s a top, top player in this division as well, so I was really pleased with him.”

Wright was forced off in the 88th minute with a nasty looking ankle injury, resulting in the player having to be stretchered round the pitch to the dressing room, although it’s too early to know the extend of the damage, which Carr is hoping it not too bad.

Asked about his first experience of taking the team at this level, Carr said: “I have just had to take two paracetemol before coming in here because I have a bit of a headache but it is not about myself, it is about the players and those supporters who travelled a long way from Coventry.

“They worked their socks off but in terms of the experience, it’s not about me, it’s about Coventry City football club and doing the best for the club.”

Asked if he enjoyed it, he said: “I enjoyed the second half much more than the first. I am just pleased we managed to do ourselves credit in the end and come away with a pleasing point.”
