Richard Keogh converts decisive spot-kick as Derby hold shootout nerve to beat Southampton in FA Cup replay

If only Ralph Hasenhuttl had tuned into Marcelo Bielsa’s remarkable lecture on how to beat Derby County. The Southampton manager could clearly have learned something from his counterpart at Leeds United, who spent much of the afternoon detailing the strengths and weaknesses of a Derby side that showed enough quality to take this replay all the way to a penalty shootout before emphatically holding their nerve to defeat top-flight opposition.

The additional 30 minutes of football was the last thing Hasenhuttl would have expected after Southampton struck twice through Stuart Armstrong and Nathan Redmond. But the irrepressible Harry Wilson led the fightback for Frank Lampard’s side, scoring one and then creating another for Martyn Waghorn to send this the full distance and even relegate the Prime Minister’s speech to BBC Two.

In the shootout at the end, it was Redmond who proved to be the villain for Southampton. He was the only player to miss, sending his effort into the stands and allowing Richard Keogh to secure a memorable victory for Derby and their fledgling manager.

It was also an enjoyable end to a day in which Derby were once again thrust into the unfolding ‘spygate’ scandal at Leeds. “He gave an impression of himself,” Lampard said of Bielsa. “I haven’t seen Pep Guardiola give that, I haven’t seen Jurgen Klopp give that, [Mauricio] Pochettino give that. They do it behind closed doors, but they don’t do it to the public.”

Before all the drama in the second half and beyond, though, the lingering question was whether a terrific Derby goal, scored by Craig Bryson, should have been overruled by the video assistant referee for the tightest of offsides. Waghorn’s right boot had strayed offside in the build-up to the goal, but was it a “clear and obvious error”?

Southampton’s lead had come when Armstrong nodded in a rebound after Shane Long’s header had been scrambled off the line. Redmond then added a second with a fine dink after racing in behind. That looked to be that, but Wilson’s free-kick drifted all the way into the far corner before the Welshman then picked out Waghorn in the box with only eight minutes remaining.

With both sides exhausted, extra time was predictably open. There was only one clear chance, though, which was wasted by Redmond as he raced through again. Derby were ruthless in the shootout, with Waghorn, Mount, Keogh, Tom Lawrence and David Nugent all scoring from 12 yards to punish Redmond for his error.

“I think it was unnecessary to lose in the penalty shootout today,” said Hasenhuttl. “We had a lot of chances in overtime. Reddy, one against one, could kill the game for us but we didn’t, so we are out. That’s a pity.”
