Former England international Richie Myler and Sydney Roosters half-back Luke Keary are both set to represent Ireland at this year’s World Cup.

The pair have both put their hands up to represent their heritage at this year’s tournament in England.

Keary, 30, qualifies for Ireland through his father and has revealed his regret at not playing for them in the last World Cup in 2017.

He told the Sydney Morning Herald: “I stuck my hand up to play for Ireland in 2017.

“It didn’t eventuate, I had a few (injuries) at the back end of the year. We’ll just see how the next few weeks go but I’ve told the (Irish officials) that I need to tell.

“I’ve always had a connection there since I was a kid. Dad’s family is still over there. I haven’t been over there but you just feel proud whenever he talked about it. It makes me feel good thinking about it.”

Keary has made 174 appearances in the NRL, scoring 39 tries. He won two caps for Australia in 2018, and also represented New South Wales in 2020.

The half-back started his career at South Sydney Rabbitohs, making his debut in 2013. He joined the Roosters ahead of the 2017 campaign.

Myler, 32, was in England’s squad for the 2008 World Cup. He was recalled to the test team by Wayne Bennett for a one-off appearance in 2018.

However, the Leeds full-back or half-back has been attending new Ireland coach Ged Corcoran’s get-togethers in the build-up to this autumn’s tournament.

Ireland open their campaign against Jamaica at Headingley on Sunday, October 16. The Wolfhounds also play Lebanon and New Zealand in their group.
