Rick Carlisle's job in Dallas is safe despite playoff struggles: 'He isn’t going anywhere'
Rick Carlisle’s postseason record is not good.
Yes, he has led the Mavericks to an NBA championship back in 2011. Since then, however, Dallas has been unable to win a playoff series at all. And on Sunday, the Mavericks fell to the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round of the playoffs for the second straight year.
Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, though, has no problem with Carlisle whatsoever.
“He isn’t going anywhere,” Cuban said Sunday night, via Brad Townsend of the Dallas Morning News

Carlisle, 61, was hired in Dallas before the 2008-09 season after short stints leading both the Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers.
He, alongside Dirk Nowitzki, led the Mavericks to their first and only championship in just his third season.
After their Finals win a decade ago, Carlisle and the Mavericks have failed to win a single playoff series in six tries — the last two losses coming at the hands of the Clippers. He boasts a 555-478 overall record throughout his time in Dallas, and his contract will keep him in Dallas through the 2022-23 season.
Dallas certainly has the pieces in place to win a playoff series. Luka Doncic averaged 27.7 points, 8.6 assists and eight rebounds this season and put up 46 points in their 126-111 loss to the Clippers in Game 7 on Sunday. Tim Hardaway Jr. shined in the postseason, averaging 18 points per game and shooting nearly 49% from behind the arc, and Kristaps Porzingis, Jalen Brunson and Maxi Kleber all contributed meaningful minutes throughout the season.
Though Carlisle still thinks that he is more than capable of getting the job done in Dallas, he isn’t willing to speculate about his job security.
“That’s a question you’ll have to ask Mark,” he said, via the Dallas Morning News. “I obviously do [think I’m the right fit here], but I’d text him and see what he has to say about it.”
Cuban, clearly, feels the same way.
“Let me tell you how I look at coaching,” he said, via ESPN’s Tim MacMahon. “You don’t make a change to make a change. Unless you have someone that you know is much, much, much better, the grass is rarely greener on the other side.”
So, at least for the foreseeable future, Carlisle’s job is safe in Dallas.
As for what they have to do to finally get a playoff series win, Carlisle's answer is clear.
“We’ve just got to keep building the team around him, and this is going to be an important offseason on many levels,” Carlisle said of Doncic, via the Dallas Morning News. “We have a lot of guys who are free agents or who have opt-ins or opt-outs with their deals, so there’s a chance that there will be a lot of change, but we don’t know.
“Time will tell on a lot of that stuff. But Luka is an amazing player. I don’t think there’s anybody that would dispute that. And we’ve just got to keep moving this team forward, and offseason will be big.”
