Rio 2016 Tuesday 16th preview: Wilson, Kenny, Trott and Tinkler carry British medal hopes in cycling and gymnastics

The 2016 Olympic Games is over halfway with the world’s best athletes battling it out for medals. Here are the most fascinating events happening on Tuesday in Rio, Brazil.

ONES TO WATCH:

Gymnastics has been very kind to Team GB at these Games, Max Whitlock’s all-around heroics landing him two Olympic golds alone on the floor and pommel horse. Talented team-mate Nile Wilson has one last chance to add even more gloss to the medal tally in the men’s horizontal bar final when he takes on the likes of German Fabian Hambuechen, Brazil’s Francisco Barreto Junior and all-around silver medallist Oleg Verniaiev of Ukraine. 20-year-old Wilson qualified second (TUESDAY 19.34 BST).

THE MAIN EVENT:

CYCLING - MEN’S KEIRIN FINAL (TUESDAY 22.20 BST)

With fiancée Laura Trott in line for an historic fourth Olympic gold medal over an hour earlier in the velodrome, Jason Kenny could take his tally to six golds if he triumphs in the final track race of these Games. If he can get the jump on German rival Joachim Eilers, amongst a host of other dangerous names, then he will match the six golds of former Team GB sprint king Sir Chris Hoy. Whatever happens, Kenny looks set to return for Tokyo 2020 in a bid to match or pass Sir Bradley Wiggins’ record eight Olympic men’s medals overall.

THE RIVALRY:

VOLLEYBALL - WOMEN’S QUARTER-FINALS (TUESDAY 02.15 BST)

Host Brazil finished top of Pool A unbeaten to book a quarter-final clash with the Chinese, who only just scraped into the last eight with two Pool B victories. Brazil are currently second in the world rankings and China third with world leaders USA on the other side of the draw. The Maracanãzinho will be packed out to provide a hostile atmosphere for the Chinese with José Roberto Guimarães’ team targeting a third successive gold.

THE UNDERDOG:

GYMNASTICS - WOMEN’S FLOOR FINAL (TUESDAY 18.47 BST)

American gymnast Simone Biles is arguably the women’s face of these Olympic Games after sweeping all before her heading into the final female competition. She qualified first for the floor final, which Britain’s Max Whitlock won in the men’s, with compatriot Aly Raisman second. Briton Amy Tinkler also lines up in the last eight looking to grab another Team GB medal. The diminutive 16-year-old starred in the 2015 world championship team bronze.

THE REDEMPTION:

FOOTBALL - WOMEN’S SEMI-FINALS (TUESDAY 17.00 BST)

Yet another raucous home crowd awaits Brazilian athletes at these Games in Rio with the Maracana sure to be full of colourful fans for the semi-final against Sweden. After they missed out on the medals in London, following silver medals in Athens and Beijing, coach Vadão will be hoping his side can play better than the nervous quarter-final penalty win over Australia. Meanwhile Sweden must get back down to earth quickly after their famous win over defending champions USA to give themselves a shot at gold.
