Rio Ferdinand lifts lid on Arsenal squad's reaction to Raheem Sterling joining club
Rio Ferdinand believes the Arsenal dressing room “can’t wait” to play alongside Raheem Sterling following his transfer.
Arsenal signed Sterling on a season-long loan from Chelsea late on transfer deadline day. The 29-year-old England international joins the north Londoners without an obligation to buy next summer, with the Blues still paying half of his wages and not receiving a loan fee.
Sterling, who was told by Chelsea he wasn't part of their plans for the remainder of 2024/25 season, will be delighted with the chance to get his career back on track. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, will be pleased to add such valuable experience to his forward line, having been light on quality depth on the flanks.
TNT Sports pundit Ferdinand hailed the deal as a "marriage made in heaven". The Manchester United legend went on to point out the positive effects signing Sterling will have in the Gunners dressing room.
Ferdinand said on Rio Ferdinand Presents: "They're a perfect fit for me right now. Raheem has something to prove to the Arsenal fans. Everyone will be waiting to see how he adapts to a new club and whether he can deliver.
"I think Arsenal will win the league this year. And this signing of Raheem Sterling only reinforces that. I think he can be that important.

"Bukayo Saka's had so many games, it would be nice if Arteta could let Saka rest for a game or two. Imagine what Saka's output is going to be like if he is finally given a rest.
"He's been going out there every game giving it mad performances - now he's got a bit of back-up. You know what it's like when a man has back-up. They get bigger, they feel stronger, they feel better and they deliver more.
"Another thing is, what will these Arsenal players be thinking when Sterling walks through the door? It's important what a new signing gives to the changing room. I think he comes in and everyone goes 'I cannot wait for this'," he said while imitating them rubbing their hands together.
Sterling’s time with Chelsea was undoubtedly a huge disappointment, but he showcased his true worth in a seven-year spell with Manchester City beforehand. There, he was coached by none other than Arteta into a prolific goal-scoring star.
He ended up making 339 appearances for City, scoring 131 goals in the process. His impressive goal tally helped the side claim four Premier League titles, the FA Cup and five League Cups.
