The premiere of American Horror Story: Cult brought back some intense memories for some people because it was a little too close to reality.
The episode, titled “Election Night,”` showed an extreme representation of the drastically different reactions voters had around the country — from those who suddenly felt a new sense of empowerment to those who questioned, “What’s gonna happen with Merrick Garland?”
On one end of the spectrum, Kai Anderson, played by Evan Peters, is a Trump supporter who feels empowered by the new POTUS. In one scene, we see Kai blending Cheetos and smearing the orange powder all over his face while intoning a Trump catchphrase: “It’s gonna be huge.”
At the other end of the spectrum, Ally Mayfair-Richards, played by Sarah Paulson, is a woman who completely loses her mind after her phobias are triggered following the election. One of these is clowns — absolutely terrifying clowns. Later, in her therapist’s office, she reveals, “Our housekeeper is gone. The moment that man got elected, she just stopped showing up, and we don’t know if she went back to Guatemala or was rounded up. It’s awful. I honestly don’t know how I’m gonna get through the next four years. I really don’t. My anxiety is just as intense now as it was on election night.”
While the first episode is frightening, and not just because of the creepy clowns, at least AHS: Cult is an outlet some people can use to poke fun at what they believe is a real-life American horror story.
