Man Utd midfielder Fred saw his team-mates punished yesterday for his poor play in training as Erik ten Hag puts his team through their paces.

Fred has come in for his fair share of criticism over the last four seasons since joining the Red Devils from Shakhtar Donetsk for £47m in 2018.

The Brazilian has failed to live up to his price tag and his move to England has coincided with some of the worst years in United’s recent history.

More McFred? Man Utd right to mend and make do this summer while Ten Hag transitions

He was one of the few players who improved under Ralf Rangnick for a while last season, with Fred contributing four assists and three goals in a 14-match period between December and the beginning of April.

And Fred is excited about the future under his new boss, Erik ten Hag, with the Brazil international ready to “put a lot of work in” to achieve success next season.

After Ten Hag’s appointment in April, Fred said: “It’s great news. He’s a world-class coach who will help us a lot here. I’ve watched Ajax and they are a great team who play good football. We know he helps us a lot and hopefully next year we can win trophies.

“The priority is to improve, develop day by day, continue fighting and challenge for trophies. We need to be back to the huge club that Manchester United are. We need to get back to being the huge club that we are. We know the new manager will help us get back on the rails and the objective will be to be back to winning again.

“We really need to put a lot of work in. The new manager’s job will not just take one day to the next. It will take time. We will have pre-season and it won’t be easy. A new style that we can adapt to. We still need to meet our objectives on this season of course, too.”

But Fred is already finding out just how strict the new regime will be after he and his team-mates were forced to do press-ups because of his poor pass in training.

The Daily Telegraph journalist James Ducker – who is on the Man Utd pre-season tour in Asia – observed:

‘One of the most instructive moments came when Fred, deployed in the holding midfield position Ten Hag has earmarked for Barcelona midfielder De Jong, attempted an overly ambitious vertical pass intended for Bruno Fernandes that was cut out by Zidane Iqbal and invited a counter-attack.

‘The error culminated in Iqbal rounding Fred and scoring, a needlessly risky turnover for which the Brazilian’s team had to do press-ups as punishment. If anything highlighted Ten Hag’s reasoning for wanting De Jong, a midfielder with precise, intelligent distribution, it was that.’
