Rita Moreno joins Fast X as Vin Diesel's grandmother

Rita Moreno, welcome to living your life one quarter mile at a time.

On Tuesday, Fast and the Furious star Vin Diesel — who plays the beloved character of Dominic Toretto in the long-running franchise — confirmed Moreno's casting in Fast X, posting a video to social media with the legendary actress by his side.

"It's been my dream forever to work with Rita Moreno, and the fact that she's here playing my grandmother makes my soul smile," said Diesel, who in the video is sitting between Moreno and co-star Michelle Rodriguez, who can't hide her excitement. "I'm so blessed."

Moreno couldn't help herself from jumping in, adding "You know what? I think my old age was waiting for you to invite me. Isn't that nice? And I'm here and the answer is yes, I'll do it." Moreno took her enthusiasm one step further by adding, "and not only do it, I'm tickled. I'm so thrilled. It's gonna be so fun."

"I love you!" Diesel blurted out, while Rodriguez added her own excited sentiment.

"Rita Moreno in the house, baby!"

Last June, Diesel spoke to Variety about the future of the Fast franchise, admitting that fans could look forward to future storylines where Toretto's mother is introduced to the fold. But he also teased that there was one other family member he wanted to introduce, and if he had control of casting, he knew exactly who should play her.

"Before we get to Mother Toretto, we will get to abuela. And the person that I'm so excited to talk about that role is Rita Moreno," Diesel shared at the time.

Moreno fulfilling Diesel's abuela dreams isn't the only "meant-to-be casting" for Fast X — back in April, Brie Larson joined the cast after revealing during a Super Bowl commercial that being a part of the franchise was "100 percent" a dream of hers.

In addition to Diesel, Rodriguez, Moreno, and Larson, the star-studded cast of Fast X includes Jason StathamVin DieselJordana BrewsterTyrese GibsonMichelle RodriguezLudacrisSung KangNathalie EmmanuelJason Momoa, and Charlize Theron.

Fast X is currently slated to hit theaters May 19, 2023. Louis Leterrier is set to direct after longtime director Justin Lin stepped down earlier this month.
