Luton Town manager Rob Edwards has revealed that the superior threat of his side during fine margins was what won the game for his side after Stoke City fell to a late 2-1 defeat at Kenilworth Road.

Elijah Adebayo's 90th minute winner stole away any hope of taking points back to the bet365 Stadium for Narcís Pelach's men as a shot from range by Tom Krauß hit the Hatters striker and went in.

The Potters had taken the lead in the first half, Tom Cannon slotting the ball away after just six minutes before a header from Carlton Morris levelled things just under 20 minutes later as Edward's side huffed and puffed in a relatively even encounter.

"It was finely balanced, we had more of a threat," the Luton boss said after the game.

"There was a danger there for them as well. There’s a good buzz in the changing room.

"We had more of a purpose, you can see they’re trying to take on and make an overlap, we got more numbers in the box, they’re trying to do the right things.

"We created good chances and should have scored more than two but it was enough for us, they were brave, they didn’t go under at 1-0 and showed good character which we struggled with at times this year, it was pleasing."

Without a win in six games, Stoke will be frustrated to let their early lead slip, especially in a game that was so 'finely balanced' as Edwards put it. The teams enjoyed an equal share of possession and a similar amount of efforts on goal, hosts Luton achieving 18 to Stoke's 15.

However, the key statistic turned out to be the set piece tally. With Pelach's side conceding 10 corners and 16 fouls - Luton gave away just four and seven - they allowed the Hatters more opportunity to swing the ball at goal.

And that they did, with both of the hosts' goals coming from set pieces. The equaliser was Morris' header from a direct corner and the winner came from a corner, Krauß's effort coming after the ball was cleared out to him from a free kick.

"It was really good,” Edwards added when asked about the execution of Morris’ header.

"One of the messages at half-time was quality in the box could have been better, but it was a brilliant cross and a well-timed header and that was a fantastic equaliser, we know we’re a threat from set-pieces."

The loss to Luton is the second time in a row that Stoke have lost 2-1 from a winning position with numerous parallels across the two games. The Potters were defeated by Sunderland at the weekend after going one-nil up after just six minutes, the exact same point that they took the lead against Edward's men on Tuesday.

After three defeats in a row, Pelach's side now sit 17th in the Championship, four points above the relegation places with a home clash against 22nd-placed Cardiff City up next.
