Robert De Niro would jump at the chance to play Andrew Cuomo, if a movie about the New York Governor’s response to the coronavirus pandemic is ever made.

The Oscar winning actor made this admission to Stephen Colbert during his appearance on The Late Show, saying that Cuomo is “doing what a president should do,” before responding to the host’s question about whether he’d ever play him in a film by saying that he “could see” the Governor in the White House.

“I am for Biden, and want everything to go well for Biden,” insisted De Niro, who is clearly all behind the Democratic presidential nominee. “But at least we have a person who is very capable, a very capable backup, if you will … he’s doing a great job, he’s doing what any president should do.”

It didn’t take long for De Niro’s remarks to make their way to Cuomo, who just so happened to appear on Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show the very next night.

Cuomo described De Niro as “just phenomenal,” before adding, "The breadth of his ability, I mean, just look at all the roles he's played. He can do anything, right? Deer Hunter, Cape Fear, he can do comedy... how 'bout Taxi Driver?"

During his discussion with Colbert, De Niro also couldn’t resist the chance to attack Trump’s handling of the pandemic. “We of course could have survived this [pandemic] much better if the idiot had done the right thing, listened and heeded all the warnings, there were many, many warnings, and we are all paying for it now. It would have been bad in some ways, but never like this.”
