Andy Robinson struck twice from the penalty spot, taking his tally for the season to six, to put the hosts in control and Jake Cassidy netted the third as Ronnie Moore's side recorded a fifth win in their first seven games.

Stevenage are now Rovers' nearest challengers after they beat Walsall and Notts County drew away to MK Dons.

Robin Shroot set Stevenage on their way and though George Bowerman levelled, Greg Tansey restored Boro's advantage and Lucas Akins made it 3-1.

County ended the Dons' 100 per cent home record but could not hang on for victory after Neal Bishop's stunning opener from 30 yards as Jay O'Shea equalised, while fourth-placed Crawley were also held, 1-1 at Colchester. Kyle McFadzean put Town ahead in the 71st minute but Anthony Wordsworth levelled with a late penalty.

Fifth-placed Preston hammered five past lowly Hartlepool. They led 2-0 at half-time as Joel Byrom and Stuart Beavon scored within a minute of each other and Jack King added a third before Scott Laird netted a late double.

At the other end of the table, managerless Coventry's woes continued as they were thumped 4-1 at Shrewsbury, while Leyton Orient enjoyed a 4-1 win over Yeovil after also opening up a two-goal interval cushion.

Harry Forrester's first senior goal earned Bournemouth a 2-2 draw with Brentford in a game which swung one way and then the other.

Troubled Portsmouth were beaten 2-1 by Swindon at Fratton Park, while Oldham came from behind to draw 1-1 at home to Scunthorpe. The Iron took an early lead through Leon Clarke but Matt Derbyshire levelled five minutes before half-time.

There were no goals in the game between Carlisle and Crewe, nor in the South Yorkshire derby between Sheffield United and Doncaster.
