League 1 club Rochdale Hornets have announced that Matt Calland has left his role as head coach by mutual consent with immediate effect.

The Greater Manchester-based club have endured a rocky campaign so far, with them sitting fifth in the League 1 table.

Calland’s departure comes the day after the Hornets were pumped 53-22 by rivals Swinton at home.

A club statement from the Hornets read: “The club would like to place on record our thanks for Matts dedication, hard work and passion for the job.

“Matt played a vital role in stabilising the club, whilst bringing forward young talented players from the Hopwood Hall Academy. We wish Matt every success for the future. “

Gary Thornton takes over from Matt Calland

Gary Thornton will take charge of Rochdale for the rest of the 2022 season.

“All fans are urged to get behind Gary and the players as we travel to Doncaster in round 16 next weekend,” the club statement continued.

Rochdale’s four losses this season have come against North Wales Crusaders, Keighley and Swinton twice.

The Hornets have beaten West Wales Raiders, Hunslet (twice), Oldham (twice), London Skolars (twice), Cornwall, Midlands Hurricanes (twice) and Doncaster.

League 1 table

Big spenders Keighley sit at the top of the League 1 table on 30 points. The Cougars have won all 15 of their matches this season.

North Wales sit just behind Keighley by four points. The Crusaders have only lost three games all season.

Swinton are in third on 24 points, with Doncaster and Rochdale both on 22 points in fourth and fifth respectively.

Hunslet are in sixth place, with 17 points. Expansion clubs Midlands, London Skolars, Cornwall and West Wales occupy the bottom four spots.
