Rodriguez to skip Dauphine

Exhausted Joaquim Rodriguez will miss this month's Critérium du Dauphiné after the Katusha rider decided to rest up before the Vuelta a Espana.

The Spaniard finished second in the Giro d'Italia and the exertions of the past three weeks in Italy have taken their toll on him.

"After the physical stress and the pressure to which I have been subjected in the Giro, it is best to recover well enough to cope with the second half of the season with renewed vigour, with the Vuelta a España as the main objective,” he said on his personal website.

“Now I need to rest and enjoy some time with my family.”

Rodriguez finished 16 seconds behind Canada's Ryder Hesjedal after the final time trial in Milan but his efforts nevertheless were enough for him to shoot to the top of the UCI WorldTour ranking list.
