Roger Federer’s tennis career will come to an end after this week’s Laver Cup, but how much has the 20-time Grand Slam winner earned – on court and off court – during his career and what is his net worth before he hangs up his racket?

The 20-time Grand Slam winner turned professional in 1998 and after more than two decades at the top that saw him play 1,500 matches he will call it a day.

Federer has been one of the most recognisable and marketable figures in world sport for the best part of his career so it is no surprise that he has racked up many a sponsorship deal.

Federer’s career prize money

The 41-year-old dominated the career prize-money earnings for long parts of his career, but he slipped to third place behind Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal after struggling with injury the past few years.

He has earned a massive $130,594,339 over the past 24 years with Djokovic now well clear at the top on $158,996,253 and Nadal on $131,661,446. Andy Murray is a distant fourth on $63,177,926.

In case you were wondering about Federer’s best season in terms of on-court earnings, it came in 2017 when he added $13,054,856 to his account on the back of winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

Sponsorships and endorsements

The who’s who in the world of sponsorship deals have always been eager to team up with Federer and back in 2017 he was named the Most Marketable Sports Person for 2016 by researchers of London School of Marketing.

Some of the big companies who are currently sponsoring the tennis great include Barilla, Credit Suisse Group (ADS), JURA, Lindt & Sprungli, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, Mercedes-Benz, Nationale Suisse, On, RIMOWA, Rolex, Sunrise Communications AG, Switzerland Tourism, Uniqlo and Wilson Sporting Goods.

In 2018 he signed a new five-year deal with Mercedes-Benz worth about $5 million annually while a year earlier he renewed his agreement with Lindt for a reported $20 million.

His contract with pasta maker Barilla – who regularly features in heartwarming videos with Federer – is worth about $40 million.

In the past he had endorsement deals with the likes of Nike, NetJets, Emmi AG and Maurice Lacroix.

His move from Nike to Uniqlo made headlines in 2018 as he his deal with the Japanese company was worth roughly $300 million for 10 years. Nike, in comparison, paid him about $10m annually.

He continued to wear Nike shoes for a few more years before switching to On in 2021. Federer has had shares in the Swiss-based athletic shoe and sports apparel manufacturer since November 2019.

His switch from Nike also meant he initially lost the world-famous RF logo.

“It’s also something that was very important for me, for the fans. They are my initials. They are mine. The good thing is it’s not theirs forever. In a short period of time, it will come to me,” he said at the time.

But two years after his move to Uniqlo he got the famous trademark back and naturally earned more money from selling merchandise with the RF logo on it.

The latest reports say Federer is worth at least $550m and it is probably on the lower side of estimates when you consider he made $130m from prize money alone while he is also a shareholder in Swiss shoe brand On and a few other companies.

He is seventh on the Forbes’ 2022 list for the World’s Highest-Paid Athletes Earnings with about $90.7m with a massive $90m coming from off-court agreements.
