After his triumph over Dimitrov, Nadal said:

"It's hard to try and describe my emotions. First of all I was tired and Grigor was playing unbelievable. It was a great match.

"I feel very happy to be part of it. I enjoyed it a lot, the crowd was amazing. Many thanks for that, huge support these two weeks.

Nadal v Federer

"When you work hard and have tough moments it's amazing to be here. Last year was tough for me because it takes a while to get back to my level.

"I worked a lot during the last month and a half at home, but I never dreamed I would be back in the final of the Australian Open. I'm very very happy."

On facing Federer, Nadal said:

"First of all I hope to recover well, and then for me it's a privilege and very special thing for both of us to be in a major final again and have the chance to compete against each other after both having difficult times.

"Federer came to the opening of my academy in Mallorca and I want to think him for coming and providing that amazing moment. We were talking tehna bout playing an exhibition match but he had a knee injury and I had the wrist so we just played a few shots together with the kids.

"So we feel very happy, and I hope you are happy to are."

Over to Roger Federer:

“What I've come to realise is when you don't feel well, when you have too many problems going on, you just won't beat top-ten players.

“At some point you reach a limit, and you just can't go beyond that. You can play them tight. You might win one of them.

"You just can't win back-to-back. You're just not feeling free enough, in your mind, in your body.

“That's where both Rafa and myself said, ‘Okay, enough of this already.’ Let's get back to 100 per cent, enjoy tennis again, enjoy the practice.

"Not just practice, treatment, practice, treatment, match, treatment. All you're doing is fighting the fire.

"From that standpoint, the six months definitely gave me something in return. I didn’t feel like I had to reorganise my life or my tennis. I just wanted to get healthy again.”
