Former Indian batsman VVS Laxman gave Rohit Sharma’s example in evolving as a Test batsman to motivate any individual in his own choice of field.

Rohit Sharma has been phenomenal with the bat throughout the Test series against England as he scored 368 runs from eight innings at an average of 52.57 so far and in the fourth Test at Oval, he registered his first overseas Test century.

The ‘Hitman’ scored 127 off 256 balls, his innings was laced with 14 fours and a six as India notched up a commanding total of 466, a lead of 367 to win the match by 157 runs.

Rohit is a classic hitter of the white ball and during the 2019 World Cup, he slammed five centuries in a single tournament and recently he went under a massive transformation with his approach as he was not only hitting the ball but also defending it well in the last two Test matches.

Laxman said that Rohit’s commitment to his game has established himself as a great Test batsman.

“His evolution as a Test opener is a terrific lesson for those aspiring for a successful career in any chosen field. One of the all-time greats in white-ball formats, Rohit has committed to establishing himself as a Test batsman. He has been fantastic this year, and the second innings hundred, his first away from home, will remain his most cherished,” Laxman wrote in his column for Times of India.

Rohit struggled in his early Test days when he batted in the middle-order, he averaged 39.62 batting between no.3-no.6, but has been a revelation as an opener. In just 27 innings he has amassed 1462 runs at an average of 58.48, laced by five centuries.

Laxman noted that since he started opening for India in Test since 2019 he has shown signs of improvements and great intent.

“Since embracing the opening role two years back, Rohit has put his attacking instincts on the backburner overseas, batting out of character without looking out of sync,” he mentioned.

Rohit achieved his career’s best Test position in ICC’s latest batting rankings after he leapfrogged Indian captain Virat Kohli at the fifth place.
