Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano claims Tottenham are part of a three-club race to sign Christian Eriksen from Brentford.
The attacking midfielder spent six-and-a-half years at Tottenham, where he made 305 appearances and scored 69 goals. Eriksen helped Tottenham finish second in the Premier League and reach the Champions League final during his spell in north London.
He opted to leave in search of a new challenge during January 2020. Inter Milan came in for his services and paid just under £17million to complete the deal.
Eriksen featured 60 times for the Nerazzurri and picked up a Serie A winners medal thanks to their title triumph in 2020-21.
But the star went through a hugely traumatic time while representing Denmark at the Euros last summer. He had a cardiac arrest on the pitch and had to be resuscitated.
Eriksen made a miraculous recovery and can play football again thanks to the fitting of an internal defibrillator. But rules in Italy meant he had to leave, and a transfer to Brentford followed.
Eriksen has transformed the Bees’ attacking threat since his arrival in January. Thanks to him, striker Ivan Toney can operate on the last man and be more deadly as a result.
Fabrizio Romano issues Christian Eriksen update
Romano provides an update on the 30-year-old’s situation and whether he could secure a move this summer.
The transfer guru states Spurs, Leicester and another ‘secret’ club all hold an interest in Eriksen.
They are waiting to pounce, should the playmaker come to a decision over his future. This will apparently happen at the end of the season.
Eriksen is ‘extremely respectful’ towards Brentford, as they gave him a route back into the Premier League. He will hold a meeting with club chiefs in June to decide on a contract extension.
His current terms expire in the summer and there is no automatic renewal in place.
Should Eriksen signal his desire to leave the Brentford Community Stadium, then Spurs, Leicester and the other unknown club will have the green light to open talks.
Romano also writes about Inter’s feelings over Eriksen. He claims Simone Inzaghi was hoping to keep the player around but couldn’t due to the league’s health regulations.
Eriksen re-joining Spurs would be a fairytale reunion as he is loved by their fans. But that is also true at Brentford and he could end up extending his spell under Thomas Frank.
It could be argued Eriksen will get more game time if he remains with the Bees, rather than going back to Spurs. Antonio Conte doesn’t tend to operate with an attacking midfielder at the moment, meaning Eriksen could be left on the bench.
