Thomas Tuchel claims Romelu Lukaku’s outspoken interview this week was “too big” to ignore after dropping the Chelsea striker from Sunday’s crunch clash with Liverpool.

The Belgium international was left out of the squad altogether after revealing that he was unhappy at Stamford Bridge.

While Tuchel insisted on Friday that he would not blow the issue out of proportion, he took the major decision to make an example of the club record £97.5million signing.

The move came after the Chelsea manager held two separate talks with Lukaku and the player, himself, addressed senior teammates.

Speaking ahead of the match, Tuchel explained: “It became too noisy, and so close to the match. So I decided to protect the preparation of the match and that is why he is out.

“Of course we have spoken, we have spoken twice and he has spoken to the lead players and after that we had to realise it’s too close to the match and it’s too big. We need to protect the preparation of the match. We have a big match to play and we need full focus, which is anyway hard to get even with this decision, but it is, in my opinion, easier.

“For sure it was a difficult decision to take but in my opinion, it is the one to take.”

Lukaku angered Tuchel after an interview conducted with Sky Sport Italia, which was broadcast this week.

The 28-year-old claimed he was unhappy at Chelsea, prompting Tuchel to accuse him of bringing unwanted noise to the club.

On Saturday night sources close to the forward feared he would be dropped, despite scoring in his last two games. And those fears became a reality after Tuchel took the bold decision to leave him out in a show of power from the German.

Lukaku dropped a bombshell when saying in the interview: “Physically I am fine. But I’m not happy with the situation at Chelsea. Tuchel has chosen to play with another system.

“I won’t give up, I’ll be professional. I am not happy with the situation, but I am professional - and I can’t give up now.”

Tuchel’s response is strong after claiming on Friday that he would not blow the incident out of proportion.

“We don’t like it, of course, because it brings noise that we don’t need and is not helpful. But on the other side, we don’t want to make more out of it than it actually is.

“You know very well how it is, it’s very easy to take lines out of context, to shorten lines to make headlines, then realise later it’s not so bad or what he meant. But let’s be honest, we don’t like it, because it’s noise we don’t need, we need a calm environment and focus. And it does not help.”
