Romeo Lavia breaks silence on Chelsea injury after Wolves win with return hint
Romeo Lavia has expressed his joy at Chelsea's 6-2 win over Wolves despite being forced to sit out the game due to injury. The 20-year-old was a notable absentee from Enzo Maresca's matchday squad named for the trip to Molineux.
The Blues initially appeared to miss his ability both on and off the ball after a chaotic first half ended 2-2 with issues for both Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez in disrupting the home side's flow going forward. A stellar response after the break though, capped off with a Noni Madueke hat-trick and return goal for Joao Felix, saw Maresca secure a first league win in charge.
Lavia had started the opening day clash against Manchester City and continued where he left off in pre-season, impressing with an all-round display that knitted things together nicely for Chelsea. He was a late substitute for the midweek victory over Servette in the UEFA Conference League as well, appearing to be rested for the journey to the Midlands.
Maresca revealed that the Belgian had picked up a minor hamstring knock though, something he described as not being too serious. Lavia's commission caused a panic though after he missed almost the entirety of last term with injury issues throughout.
The former Southampton and Manchester City academy ace only made one appearance during the 2023/24 campaign, and that was a 30-minute cameo off the bench. Almost ironically, Lavia's first inclusion in a Chelsea squad was against Wolves on Christmas Eve, eight months ago.
On that occasion, Chelsea went down 2-1 but were left with their first away win against Gary O'Neil's current side since an eerily similar 5-2 scoreline in 2019.

Showing his jubilation after the game, and addressing his fitness concerns, Lavia wrote on Twitter/X: "5 [star emoji] team performance! Let’s keep it going. ps: I’ll be back very soon. Nothing to worry about it’s going to be a long and exciting season for us Blues. [blue heart emoji]"
Maresca himself was quizzed on the problem that ruled him out of just a second-ever start for Chelsea. "Hamstring irritation," HE reiterated. "Hopefully it's not long. We'll see."
Chelsea travel to Servette on Thursday to complete their Conference League play-off tie. They then host Crystal Palace in the last game before the international break.
