Ronald Koeman questions Cody Gakpo’s decision to join Liverpool: ‘He’s in a team that’s not doing well’

Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman has suggested Cody Gakpo joined Liverpool too soon after his quiet start to life on Merseyside.

With Jurgen Klopp’s side struggling at both ends of the pitch, the 23-year-old has failed to contribute a goal or an assist in six appearances - only one of which has ended in a win.

Having left PSV Eindhoven in January, Koeman has questioned whether Dutch international Gakpo has the experience to adapt quickly to the Premier League with Ryan Gravenberch’s tough start at Bayern Munich used as a similar example.

“The level in England is higher than in the Netherlands, but they are also young boys, aren't they?” he told a YouTube show hosted by former footballer Andy van der Meyde.

“Like Gravenberch going to Bayern and not playing. Then that is difficult.”

He continued: “You can see that he has ended up in a team that is not doing well.

“Then it becomes more difficult for him, as a new signing. You are tested right away. And if you don't score or you're not important and you don't win any matches, it's very difficult, especially for a young player.

“If that's was someone aged 28 with experience, it would be different.”
