Cristiano Ronaldo has snubbed two offers to leave Man Utd, while the reasons why a move to Chelsea are highly unlikely have emerged, per a trusted source.

Erik ten Hag has hopes high after two thumping wins to begin their pre-season campaign. The Red Devils routed Liverpool 4-0 in Bangkok before scoring four more against Melbourne Victory down under.

While it’s incredibly early days, it does appear Man Utd’s squad are responding well to Ten Hag’s system and tactical demands.

However, one player who is persistently perceived as a poor fit for the Dutch boss is Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 37-year-old’s future is in limbo after urging the club to entertain offers from suitors who can offer Champions League football. Following their sixth-placed finish last year, Manchester United cannot match Ronaldo’s ambition in that regard.

Yet transfers for players of Ronaldo’s calibre and on the wages he commands aren’t easy to make.

The pond Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, is fishing in is a small one, though his client has received two offers according to Fabrizio Romano.

Two offers snubbed

Providing a comprehensive update on all things Ronaldo, Romano responded to speculation over a “crazy” financial offer to play in Saudi Arabia,

The trusted journalist said via his YouTube channel: “This is true. He received a crazy proposal but at the moment Cristiano wants to continue in Europe.”

An MLS club reportedly lodged a similar offer, though again, Romano reaffirmed Ronaldo’s desire to remain in Europe where he can play in the Champions League.

Chelsea and Bayern Munich have been touted as potential landing spots. Indeed, new Blues owner, Todd Boehly, has reportedly discussed bringing Ronaldo to Stamford Bridge with Jorge Mendes.

Romano stated Boehly is receptive to the idea, though manager Thomas Tuchel is having none of it.

Tuchel sees Ronaldo as Lukaku 2.0

Explaining why, Romano added: “Tuchel doesn’t want to sign Ronaldo. The only one that could change the situation [for Chelsea] is Tuchel himself.

“Todd Boehly was open to discussions [about signing Ronaldo] but as of today, Tuchel says no, he’s not interested.

“He thinks the Romelu Lukaku deal was a problem for Chelsea from a tactical point of view. He’s got the feeling it could be the same with Ronaldo.

“He wants players that are perfect for his tactical ideas and approach. This is why negotiations between Ronaldo and Chelsea at the moment are completely off.

The possibility of joining Bayern Munich was floated, especially if Robert Lewandowski moves to Barcelona. However, the Bavarians public stance thus far is that they’re not in the mix.

Unless the situation takes a sudden turn, Ronaldo could very well be at Old Trafford next season.

That will provide a selection dilemma for Ten Hag, though Romano stressed Ronaldo’s current dissatisfaction is centred at the club, not the man in charge.

“There is no problem between Ten Hag and Cristiano Ronaldo,” added Romano. “The problem is between Ronaldo and the ambition of Manchester United.

“Ambition on signings, ambition on building the team… this is what’s happening between Cristiano and Man Utd.”

Ronaldo could become a problem for Ten Hag

There is no doubt Ronaldo can still make the grade at elite level. The uncertainty surrounds his adaptability to Ten Hag’s system which requires every player to contribute on the defensive end.

The signs were there from match one in United’s 4-0 thumping of Liverpool. All 10 outfield players were involved in the press and when the lines were broken, all 10 hastily retreated back into a deeper defensive position.

At 37, Ronaldo must either accept he must do more defensively, or risk not being selected.

A player of Ronaldo’s profile will still generate headlines if rooted to the bench. Ten Hag can well do without sideshows given the task he faces overhauling the likes of Liverpool and Man City.
