Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has discussed that Cristiano Ronaldo interview and is refusing to be drawn into a war of words.

Rooney has been somewhat critical of his former Red Devils teammate in recent months.

With Ronaldo struggling for form at Old Trafford this term, Rooney recently said “time catches up with us all”, which it does, and which it has with the Portuguese superstar.

The former Derby County manager also commented on Ronaldo’s decision to snub Erik ten Hag and storm down the tunnel when asked to come off the bench late on against Tottenham last month.

Rooney said this was “unacceptable”, which it was.

But poor Ronny has not taken kindly to his former teammate’s comments, labeling him a ‘rat’ and poking fun at his appearance in an interview with Piers Morgan.

The 37-year-old criticised Gary Neville as well, but has some nice words to say about Roy Keane and Rio Ferdinand – obviously because those two have stuck up for him.

On Rooney, Ronaldo told Morgan: “I don’t know why he criticises me so badly. Probably because he finished his career and I’m still playing at high level.”

He then added: “I’m not going to say that I’m looking better than him. Which is true…”

As well as his harsh words about Rooney and Neville, Ronaldo slammed United’s infrastructure from the cafeteria to the gym, saying nothing has changed from when he first joined the club back in 2004.

Former interim boss Ralf Rangnick and current manager Ten Hag also caught some strays as Morgan lapped up every second of the Portugal captain’s 90-minute interview.

And Rooney has now responded to what he has called a “strange” interview.

The United legend clearly doesn’t fancy beefing with Ronaldo and has said he hasn’t been ‘critical’ of the 37-year-old striker.

“Cristiano is a fantastic player, and as I’ve said before, him and Messi are the two best players to probably ever play the game,” Rooney said at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai.

“Again, it is not a criticism, what I said is age comes to all of us and Cristiano, obviously, is feeling that and is finding it hard to deal with.

“Obviously, he has done an interview and it has gone global.

“Bit strange, some of the comments are strange but I’m sure Manchester United will deal with it once they have seen the full interview and they’ll take whatever action they need to take.”

Rooney was in Dubai to accept the Player Career Award, which means nothing because it is the complete and utter b***ocks that is the Globe Soccer Awards.

The former Everton teenager’s reply was very respectable as he refused to be drawn into a war of words with Ronaldo. He clearly has better things to do.

Ronaldo’s future at Old Trafford is now up in the air following this interview, but a January exit looks extremely likely.

It is unclear who will come in for him in the winter window, but he better hope he receives an offer up to his standards.
