Rory Burns And Dom Sibley’s Opening Partnership Just Does Not Work, Says Michael Vaughan

Former England skipper and batsman Michael Vaughan feels that England needs to make changes in the opening pair as the current partnership isn’t working. He was inclined towards bringing back Dawid Malan into the playing XI while Haseeb Hameed opens the batting.

For the fourth innings in a row, English openers failed to set up a good platform for the team. They failed to keep the Indian new ball bowlers at bay, with both being dismissed for a duck in the fourth innings of the Lord’s Test.

Malan’s experience will definitely boost the batting line-up, Vaughan claimed in his latest column for the Telegraph. Although Malan, the no.1 T20I batsman in the world, hasn’t played red-ball cricket in recent times, his technique is better than the current duo.

I want a bit more substance and experience. I want to see Dawid Malan at three. England cannot keep going with the Rory Burns-Dom Sibley opening partnership after 10 ducks this year. It is the definition of insanity. It just does not work.

In total, 37 percent of their partnerships this year have not gone past the second over. You can’t carry on with that and England knows it. I would give Hameed his rightful spot to open and throw in Malan. They have three games against India then straight into an Ashes series,” the former captain said.

The devastating loss at Lord’s will only crush England’s confidence further. The hosts have lacked a proper batsman apart from Joe Root. The withdrawal of Ben Stokes prior to the India series only piled on the misery for the English.

They had one of the greats to get them out of a hole in the last Ashes Test at Headingley. They were bowled out for 67 but Stokes played the greatest innings of all time.

They have to find some spirit and belief. It will probably have to be Joe (Root) again. But how much has this defeat sapped his energy?” Vaughan questioned.

The onus will once again be on England’s two best players Root and James Anderson to keep the English afloat. A defeat in the next Test at Headingley will likely mean curtains on England’s chances of coming back into the series.
