Ross Barkley scores dramatic late leveller for Chelsea as furious Jose Mourinho involved in touchline bust-up

Chelsea scored a 96th minute leveller to deny Manchester United a crucial victory as a game of relentless drama at Stamford Bridge finished in a 2-2 draw.

Frustrated United manager Jose Mourinho was involved in a touchline bust-up after the game, seemingly reacting to something said to him by one of Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri’s assistants.

Anthony Martial had scored a brilliant second half double as United came from behind to lead, but Ross Barkley had the final say deep in stoppage time.

On a gloriously sunny autumnal afternoon, Chelsea had the better of the opening exchanges, and Willian blasted a free-kick from just outside the United penalty area over the crossbar.

The hosts struck first after twenty minutes, and it was the simplest of affairs, with Willian floating over a corner and an unmarked Toni Rudiger expertly guiding a header into the net. It was Chelsea’s 52nd corner of the season, and the first time they had converted from one.

From a United point of view, Paul Pogba seemed particularly infuriated by the defending, although arguably it was the French World Cup winner at fault for not marking his man.

Chelsea continued to press as the first half wore on, although good goalscoring chances were few and far between. United weren’t bad by any means but they lacked spark.

Just after half-time, United’s defending was left wanting as Alvaro Morata ran through and shot straight at United goalkeeper David De Gea.

But then United hit back with an equaliser ten minutes into the second half. Juan Mata had a shot saved by home goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, and after Chelsea failed to properly clear, Ashley Young’s cross deflected off Jorginho and straight to Martial, who controlled well and smashed the ball into the net.

It was obvious both teams really wanted the victory, and Chelsea went close when Willian whipped over a fine free-kick and David Luiz headed narrowly wide. United had De Gea to thank soon after as Kante fired a superb low shot at goal, which the Spaniard did well to palm away.

With 17 minutes left, United went in front. Juan Mata beat a lunging Luiz to the ball and found Marcus Rashford, who fed Martial. The Frenchman curled a delightful low shot into the net, sending the thousands of visiting fans into delirium.

United seemed to be heading for victory, but six stoppage time minutes gave the hosts hope and with almost the last kick they levelled. Luiz headed against a post from a set-piece, Rudiger’s rebound effort was well saved by De Gea and Barkley stabbed home. Quite a finish. Quite a game.
