ROUNDUP: Wilmington girls top Slippery Rock for at least a share of region crown

Feb. 13—The Wilmington High girls basketball team picked up at least a share of a region championship Monday night.

The Lady Greyhounds started strong and rolled to a 51-19 District 10, Region 4-3A/4A home victory over Slippery Rock.

The Lady Greyhounds (11-1 region, 17-4 overall) can sew up the region title outright with a home victory at 7:30 p.m. Thursday over Greenville.

"I thought defensively we came out and guarded well tonight," Wilmington coach Mike Jeckavitch said. "We were lacking in size compared to Slippery Rock.

"We did a nice job of team defense and team rebounding. It was good to get that win."

Lia Krarup netted 22 points for Wilmington and Avery Harlan was next with eight. Reese Bruckner chipped in seven.

CJ Sabo scored nine points for Slippery Rock.

Knoch 52,

Laurel 31

The Lady Knights opened the second quarter on a 10-0 run to take control and pull away for a nonsection home win over the Lady Spartans.

Knoch (13-9) pushed a 12-5 lead after one stanza to 33-10 at the break.

This was the season finale for Laurel (4-18), which closed the season on an eight-game losing streak.

Lexi Krol scored 11 points to lead the Lady Spartans and Morgan Barker was next with six.

Adah Fuller paced Knoch with a game-high 17 points.

Quaker Valley 60,

Shenango 56

The Wildcats' rally fell short in a nonsection home loss to the Quakers in the regular-season finale for both squads.

Shenango (12-10) trailed 19-13 after one quarter and 29-18 at the half.

"I thought we played hard," Wildcats coach Bob McQuiston said. "That second quarter really killed us.

"In the second half, they stepped up and we had a gut check at halftime. I thought we responded well."

Shenango cut the deficit to 45-36 going to the fourth period.

"We made a nice little run; We tied it at one point," McQuiston said of the final eight minutes. "Then, they went on an 11-0 run. We took a couple of quick shots and didn't convert. That run almost takes the wind out of your sails. We still battled back, though. I thought we competed in the second half and that's what we wanted to do."

Brody McQuiston led the Wildcats with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Joe Campoli contributed 14 points and Jason Malley was next with eight.

Zachary Washington tossed in 25 tallies to lead Quaker Valley (11-11).

The Wildcats return to action at 7 p.m. Feb. 20 in the opening round of the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs at home against Eden Christian.

Neshannock (18-3) pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring Laurel (2-20) 25-9 to stretch a 34-23 halftime buffer to 59-34 going to the fourth quarter.

Jake Rynd recorded 18 points for the Lancers and David Kwiat contributed 15. Talan Anderton added 10 for the victors.

Jayden Iorio tossed in 14 markers for the Spartans and Luca Santini supplied eight.

Neshannock hosts Mount Pleasant at 7 p.m. Monday in the first round of the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs.
