Working out at home can be, well, a bit boring. If you’re used to hitting the gym with friends or going to workout classes with motivating instructors, it can be hard to commit to a routine. But what if you could turn exercise into a game? The Ergatta Rower does just that.

Ergatta makes a water rowing machine with an attached 17.3-inch high-definition touchscreen that provides a few different gaming-inspired workouts. Compete in races against other Ergatta rowers, try an interval-based HIIT workout or take part in a goal-based “Push Program” designed around a final challenge. You can also row as you’d like at your own pace around your own distance or time goals, if that’s more your thing.

Rowing works the entire body, as the machine mimics the movement you’d make if you were rowing a boat. And while you can use it for low or high impact exercises, it’s easier on the joints than, say, running.

Another perk: Ergatta says the rower is “designed for your living room.” It can be folded up and rolled to any space in the room — it weighs approximately 103 pounds. And this machine is seriously sleek. It’s handmade in Rhode Island with American cherry wood. Plus, it comes with a 5-year warranty.

The rower costs $2,199 (which is comparable to a Peloton spin bike) and comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee. If you don’t like it within your first month of use, you can send it back and get a full refund.

Due to high demand, Ergatta says it will take six to eight weeks for your rower to get to you. (Shipping is an additional $199.) When it does arrive, it will be assembled and installed by a professional.

In addition to the rower, like other virtual workout programs, you’ll have to subscribe to an Ergatta membership for $29 per month or $348 per year. This gives you access to all of the digital workout programs.

With all that said, Ergatta users can’t seem to get enough. On its website, 95% of reviewers give it 5 out of 5 stars.

“Not only is she gorgeous and a compliment to our home gym, but to use her is pure therapy,” wrote one Ergatta reviewer. “Physically, it’s a powerhouse, but the sound is soothing and it’s not a tug-of-war to row. It’s smooth and easy and flows perfectly.”

“I’d never been on a rowing machine before my Ergatta was delivered,” wrote another customer in the reviews. “I’ve always been a runner and was worried I wouldn’t get the same just-did-cardio feeling after rowing. But it’s won me over. I love it. I have a competitive nature, so having the races ensures I always get a good workout in.”

Yes, it may be pricier than say this popular rower on Amazon that’s under $200, but the Ergatta is a different breed of exercise equipment. With a touchscreen and motivating exercise programs included, you’re guaranteed to get a good workout in — and have more fun doing it.
