Sisa Waqa, centre, suffered a hand injury after Melbourne's win over Leeds

The Australian champions say the accident happened in the Fiji international's hotel room in London the day after their 18-14 win over the Rhinos at Headingley. It comes just a week before Melbourne launch the defence of their NRL crown.

"Waqa accidentally cut his right hand on some broken glass on Saturday evening," a Melbourne spokesman said. "Storm medical staff attended to the injury immediately. After returning to Melbourne on Wednesday, further scans revealed Waqa required surgery to a severed tendon and he will miss the first eight rounds."
