The match, in honour of Warrington's England international Ben Westwood, was delayed by two hours to allow the mud and snow covered pitch to settle as Warrington dominated possession and territory without really breaking Wigan down.

The Wolves opened the scoring through Joel Monaghan, with Rhys Evans adding a second score just before half time.

Both sides gave some younger players run-outs in the second half, but there was little change to the pattern of the match as Brett Hodgson scored and converted Warrington’s third try.

Chris Riley added a late fourth as Warrington’s preparations reach a positive climax ahead of the season start next weekend.

Warrington's team was a little stronger than Wigan's, with the Warriors not using the likes of Man of Steel Sam Tomkins and captain Sean O'Loughlin.

Warrington fielded a virtually full-strength side, with 4,696 fans turning out to celebrate Westwood's career with the club which has taken in three Challenge Cup wins.

Wigan start their Super League campaign at Salford on Friday, with Warrington at home to Castleford next Sunday.
