The 49-year-old Australian, who has spent the last 20 years playing and coaching in England, was sacked by Salford 12 months ago after 16 months in the job.

Veivers, a former St Helens stalwart who was previously assistant coach at Wigan and Bradford, takes over from Gary Charlton, who resigned a fortnight ago.

Town vice-chairman Mark Fryer said: "Phil's the right person with a no-nonsense approach and the right pedigree to move the club forward.

"He comes with a wealth of experience, is very highly regarded within the game and has a wealth of contacts throughout rugby league."
