A runner, who has been named as 32-year-old David Reichman of Brooklyn, collapsed after crossing the finish line of the Brooklyn Half Marathon yesterday. Although Reichman received medical attention, he later died in hospital.

It's been reported that 15 other runners were hospitalised with a range of injuries, many linked to the high temperatures and humidity during the race.

Prior to running, event organisers NYRR reminded runners about the risks of running in warmer weather, sharing guidelines on how to stay safe in the heat. Official weather reports showed 97% humidity for New York during the race and temperatures ranging from 15ºc at the start and 21ºc when Reichman's death was reported.

Nearly 20,000 runners completed the 13.1 miles from the start at the Brooklyn Museum, following the route around Prospect Park and along Ocean Parkway to the finish in Coney Island.

The race hadn't taken place for 1,099 days due to Covid.

Our deepest sympathies go out to David's family and friends.
