Rusk's Claire Tipton wins state championship in powerlifting

Mar. 16—FRISCO — Rusk High School has a brand new state champion.

Claire Tipton won first place at the Texas High School Women's Powerlifting Association State Championships, which were held at the Comerica Center in Frisco Friday.

Tipton, a junior, lifted in the 148-pound weight classification.

Tipton, who came in fourth place at state last year while competing in the 132-pound category, lifted 405 lbs. In squat, benched 265 pounds and vaulted 330 lbs. In dead lift, giving her a total of 1,000 lbs.

She finished well in front of the runner-up, Kaida Martinez of Bishop High School, who had lifts totaling 985 lbs.

To add to her big day, Tipton set a new state record for her weight class in bench press.

In the process of qualifying for state, Tipton won the Class 4A, Region 3 Championship in the 148-lb. division by hoisting a total of 1,030 lbs.
