Ruud van Nistelrooy will have to cancel one of Leicester City’s existing loan deals if he wants to make a short-term signing from Manchester United.

Van Nistelrooy is set to be named City’s next manager and may feel he can improve his new squad by bringing in one of the talents that are surplus to requirements at Old Trafford. He enamoured himself with the United squad during his four-month coaching stint, and there may be players keen to join him at the King Power Stadium.

However, it’s not that simple. While there’s no barrier to permanent transfers, the Premier League’s rules could prevent a loan deal.

Each Premier League club is only allowed two players on loan from rival clubs at any one time. It means that if City want to bring in a player from United for the second half of the season, then they will have to cancel one of their existing loans.

It would be a huge surprise if City were to consider ending Facundo Buonanotte’s spell early given he has been the club’s best-performing outfield player this season. But it’s not out of the question that Odsonne Edouard’s time at the King Power Stadium could be brought to a premature end.

The Crystal Palace loanee has made just four substitute Premier League appearances for City this season. Even when Jamie Vardy was out, he was still only back-up to Jordan Ayew for the starting spot up front.

Plus, Patson Daka is now fit, and Edouard didn’t even make the bench for Steve Cooper’s final game in charge against Chelsea at the weekend. There’s also the possibility that a new striker may be on the agenda when the January window rolls around.

In the case, Edouard may be pushed even further to the fringes and it may not be in the club’s benefit to keep him around. Especially if it then opens the door for Van Nistelrooy to bring in a United player on loan.
