The league will be without its top rookie scorer for several weeks after the Buffalo Sabres announced Victor Olofsson suffered a lower-body injury on Thursday night and will be sidelined for the foreseeable future.

Olofsson leads all rookies this season with 35 points and 16 goals in 42 games, and was named NHL Rookie of the Month for both October and December.

The Swedish winger caught a rut and fell awkwardly during Thursday night’s 3-2 overtime win against the Edmonton Oilers, and did not return to the game.

It’s a massive loss for a team fighting tooth and nail for a playoff spot, currently sitting fifth in the Atlantic with an 18-17-7 record.

Olofsson is second on the team in goals and points, trailing only linemate Jack Eichel, who has been on fire with 26 goals and 54 points in 41 games.
