Late sac fly lifts Tupelo past Roff

Mar. 20—ROFF — Tupelo used a sacrifice fly by Peyton Bills in the top of the seventh inning to slide past Roff 3-2 in a meeting between the two local Class B powers Monday night in Roff.

No. 3 Tupelo improved to 3-1 on the year, while fourth-ranked Roff dropped to 5-4.

Coach Clay Weller's club traveled to Dale Tuesday and is at Boswell Friday. Roff hosted Pontotoc County foe Allen Tuesday with Antlers heading to Tiger Field on Thursday.

Roff scored twice in the bottom of the first inning and never scored again against THS hurlers Davin Weller and Cash Wafford.

Caden Graves got the host Tigers started in the opening frame with a one-out walk and scooted all the way to third on a base hit to right field by Gavin Wilson. Roff loaded the bases via a walk to Lane McCarter.

Graves scored on an infield hit by Trey Humphers and Wilson came home on an error during the same play to put Roff ahead 2-0.

Tupelo got those two runs back in the top of the third inning on a two-out, two-RBI single by Bills, who finished 1-for-3 with three RBIs for the THS team.

The visitors collected five total hits from five different players. Teacyn Meek, Colton Bourland, Luke Foreman and Briesan Bastible had the other Tupelo hits.

Kaden Darnell and Mason Dansby had the only other Roff base hits.

Weller was the winning hurler for Tupelo. He struck out nine, walked two and allowed one earned run in six innings of work. Wafford nailed down a save with an inning of relief.

Graves was the starter for Roff. He struck out nine, walked six and allowed two earned runs in four innings. Wilson was tagged with the loss after giving up a single earned run in three innings of relief.
