Sadio Mane’s PR agent has denied the player’s wages were behind his Liverpool exit as rumours of a fall-out with Jurgen Klopp persist.
Mane, 30, shocked the footballing world by revealing his plans a day after the Reds Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid. It was a bolt from the blue and something that left the Merseyside fans mystified. The Senegal international has now joined Bayern Munich, with Liverpool receiving an initial £27.4m.
They could garner a further £7.7m from add-ons, making the transfer worth a potential £35.1m. While that is a decent sum for a player who had just one year left on his contract, there is still confusion surrounding his departure.
The official line from Mane himself is that he wanted to ‘see a new challenge’. However, some reports have suggested that his motivation for switching clubs was financial.
It was said the former Southampton man was unhappy with his wage structure and the deal on offer. However, the African’s PR agent, Bacary Cisse, has been quick to put the story to bed.
“Those are false rumours. We didn’t want to talk about that,” he told TV5Monde. “A player of Sadio’s calibre can’t be earning the salary that people are speaking about. The numbers circulating are completely wrong.
“Sadio was already earning more than that when he joined Liverpool from Southampton. He extended his contract in 2018 and his salary was much higher than the numbers circulating in the media.”
Klopp comment a possible exit catalyst for Mane
Mane has left Anfield on good terms, stating that he will be ‘Liverpool’s number one fan forever’. However, there is a school of thought that it might actually have been Jurgen Klopp who forced him out.
The German has always been full of praise for the ex-Red Bull Salzburg ace. But former West Ham winger Trevor Sinclair recently revealed his take on the issue.
The ex-England star believes that Klopp’s belittling of the Africa Cup of Nations angered his star forward. Whether or not that is the case is open to debate.
But Cisse’s comments that it had nothing to do with money will only add fuel to the rumours. Mane bagged 120 goals from 269 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool.
He will go down as a club legend and is unlikely ever to reveal if Klopp was behind his leaving.
