Sadio Mane says he did not mean to offend Liverpool fans by saying he would follow the wishes of the Senegalese public by looking to leave Anfield.

Earlier this week, the forward joked that he would “do what they want” after claiming “60 to 70 per cent of Senegalese want me to leave Liverpool”.

Such remarks came after widespread claims the former Southampton forward had asked to leave Anfield in pursuit of a new challenge, with Bayern Munich reportedly interested in signing him.

Out of contract in the summer of 2023, any request from Mane to leave could leave Liverpool in a difficult position, particularly with Mohamed Salah’s deal running out at the same time.

“I spoke yesterday while joking with a bit of humour and it was everywhere,” he said after Senegal beat Benin.

“I think we’ll stop there. Liverpool is a club I respect a lot. The fans adopted me since day one. Regarding the future, we’ll see”
