SAINTS have reportedly lodged an “opening offer” for Manchester City goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu.

The Daily Mail claims the St Mary’s side, who have been linked with the Republic of Ireland international all summer, are hoping to sign Bazunu “in a deal worth up to £10million”.

The report comes the same day as Saints confirmed keeper Fraser Forster would be leaving the club at the end of his contract.

The 34-year-old has signed a two-year deal with Tottenham, starting on July 1.

Bazunu has spent the past two seasons on loan in League One, representing the likes of Rochdale and Portsmouth.

He was awarded Pompey’s players’ player of the season accolade for 2021-22, having featured 46 times for the club in all competitions.

Speaking after receiving his award at Pompey, the Dublin-born ace said: “I want to play football at the highest level, but don’t look too far ahead. I’ll just take it one day at a time and see where it takes me.”

Saints still have Alex McCarthy as a senior goalkeeping option for next season, with Willy Caballero’s current deal set to expire.

Fellow stopper Harry Lewis is set to join Bradford City, meaning Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad is extremely light on keeping options.

The Daily Echo understands Saints are looking to recruit a younger goalkeeper to compete with McCarthy for the number one spot next season.
