The New Orleans Saints are reportedly nearing a one-year contract with Jameis Winston after signing fellow quarterback Taysom Hill to a new deal.
Yahoo Sports' Charles Robinson said New Orleans will bring in Winston to compete with Hill - who will now be with the team through the 2021 season - to be Drew Brees' backup.
Winston was not re-signed by the Buccaneers after the arrival of free agent Tom Brady, ending the 2015 No. 1 overall pick's five-year run with Tampa Bay that included zero trips to the playoffs.
Winston led the NFL last season with 5,109 passing yards and was second with 33 touchdown passes, but he also topped the league with 30 interceptions.
Hill originally signed a first-round tender to return to New Orleans for 2020 and has now had another year added on.
Winston or Hill could be the eventual successor to the 41-year-old Brees, who agreed to a two-year, $50million contract to return to New Orleans but has said in the past that he is taking his career one year at a time.
The franchise also lost Teddy Bridgewater to the Carolina Panthers in free agency, leaving Hill and seventh-round pick Tommy Stevens of Mississippi State as the other quarterbacks on the roster.
