According to Egypt manager Ehab Galal, Mohamed Salah ‘refused Liverpool’s request’ prior to his nation’s recent international game against Guinea.
Salah enjoyed a great season on a personal level in 2021/22. He grabbed 31 goals and 16 assists in 51 games for Liverpool.
His 23 goals in the Premier League saw him share the Golden Boot award with Tottenham Hotspur’s Heung-Min Son.
The forward struggled with an injured groin at the end of the campaign. After being taken off early in the FA Cup final, he was not able to start Liverpool’s last two league games.
Salah was fit enough to play the full 90 minutes in the Champions League final as Liverpool were beaten 1-0 by Real Madrid.
The 29-year-old is part of Egypt’s squad for this international break. They beat Guinea 1-0 in their first African Cup of Nations qualifier on Sunday.
The attacker played the whole game even though Liverpool were against this. Galal has revealed that the English club wanted Salah to have an X-ray before Sunday’s game but he refused:
“Salah was suffering from an injury and played through it,” Galal said post-match (quotes via Daily Mail).
“He rejected Liverpool’s request for an X-ray before the game and will now undergo it.”
Egypt have games against Ethiopia and South Korea over the next week.
Elsewhere, according to reports, Liverpool will look to sign top Manchester United target Darwin Nunez this summer if Sadio Mane leaves the club.
The Uruguay international has contributed 34 goals and four assists in 41 matches in all competitions this season for Benfica, with that form attracting interest from a number of top clubs this summer.
Bayern Munich are understood to be the main interested party in Mane with the Bundesliga champions making an opening offer of £21m up front with a further £4m in add-ons, which the Premier League side have rejected.
And The Times insists that if Liverpool decide to sell Mane this summer they ‘would demand a fee sufficient to recruit a suitable replacement’ with Nunez unlikely to come cheap.
The report confirms there ‘is interest’ from Liverpool in Nunez – who scored in both legs of the Reds’ Champions League quarter-final victory over Benfica this season – but they ‘will not pursue the 22-year-old at any cost’.
