Sale Sharks have announced the signing of former England scrum-half Joe Simpson on a short-term contract ahead of the new season.

Simpson, who has played for Wasps and Gloucester, made his only England appearance in the 2011 Rugby World Cup in a pool clash with Georgia.

He has signed a six-month deal at the Premiership team as he follows up recent loans at Saracens and Bath with another short-term rugby contract.

Sale Sharks director of rugby Alex Sanderson needed to strengthen his scrum-half stocks with both Raffi Quirke and Will Cliff currently out injured.

Proven performer

“We felt that we were short of a bit of experience in the scrum-half position and Joe brings that in abundance,” said Sanderson on Simpson‘s arrival.

“He’s a proven performer who’s played at the very highest level for the past decade and more and we’re sure he will be a brilliant addition to what is a very young squad.

“Everyone who has worked with Joe speaks really highly of him in terms of his leadership off the field so we’re really excited to see what he can do here. Joe’s experience will be invaluable for our young players like Raffi, Gus Warr and Nye Thomas.”

The electric Simpson played 230 times for Wasps during 2006 to 2019 and was regarded as one of the most exciting nines in the European arena.

The 34-year-old has also played Sevens rugby for Great Britain and is sure to add a wealth of experience to Sale Sharks over the coming six months.
