Jim Goodwin says he would love to keep Sam Dalby at Dundee United beyond this season.

But the Tannadice boss fears other clubs could swoop for the out-of-contract Wrexham striker. On-loan Dalby netted his fifth goal for the Tangerines at the weekend as Rangers were held to a 1-1 draw at Ibrox. The 24-year-old will be available on a free transfer next summer and Goodwin hopes a deal can be struck to extend the frontman's stay in Tayside.

He said: "It's a great return for a boy that had to be patient at the beginning. He came in late on the last day of the window. It took a little bit of time to get used to the surroundings and his team-mates, so he's had to be patient. But I've great faith in Sam, he's a player I've admired for a long time.

"He's done everything I expected and he's loving it here at the moment. I spoke to his agent after the game on Saturday, he's speaking very positively about the set-up here. He's a player we really like and we would love to enter into negotiations.

"The only concern is that, as much as we're admiring the work Sam's doing here, I'm pretty sure there will be lots of other people taking notice. No 9s that can hold the ball up, lead the line, have really good feet, can link the game up, but also have an eye for goal, are rare. I'm not stupid enough to think there won't be other people out there that might have deeper pockets than us."
