Sam Powell is keen to remain with Wigan for the remainder of his career, he told Love Rugby League.

Powell, 29, joined the club at the age of 16 and progressed through their system. He won the Academy Grand Final in 2011 against Warrington and was rewarded with his first team debut the following season.

The Wigan-born player began his career in the halves, enjoying his breakthrough year in 2013, making 16 appearances.

He was moved to hooker by then-head coach Shaun Wane in 2014, a position he has played his career in ever since. Powell celebrated his 200th career game in September 2020, and to date has made 205 Super League appearances.

Powell has won two Grand Finals, one League Leaders’ Shield and a World Club Challenge with Wigan.

Sam Powell hoping to see out career at Wigan

Asked if he would like to remain with Wigan for the rest of his career, Powell told Love Rugby League; “Yes, I would. I’ve been here a long time now. I’m invested in coaching here and wanting to win here. So, yeah, most definitely.”

Powell, who returns this Saturday from his six-match ban, is already planning for life after league, hoping to go into coaching. He has been helping train the club’s academy side, while youngster Brad O’Neill also praised his team-mates influence from the sidelines.

“It’s something I enjoy,” Powell said on coaching. “It’s something I’m passionate about.

“I know a lot of other players and other lads at different clubs and our club studying to get qualifications and other things so that they can make smooth transitions after they’ve played. Coaching is what I want to do.

“I help out with our academy here at Wigan one a day a week. I’m trying to get as much experience as I can for when I finish playing.”
