England captain Sam Tomkins says he has full belief that Shaun Wane’s side can make history by winning the World Cup on home soil this autumn.

The 33-year-old is currently the skipper of Wane’s side. He will lead his country again on June 18 when they take on the Combined Nations All Stars at Warrington.

England are drawn in a group with Samoa, France and Greece at the World Cup, which is hosted in England this autumn.

Tomkins said: “We can go and win the World Cup, we know that.

“We’ve got potential, we’ve got a really good side. We just need to make sure we click and play together.

“We are going to play against some tough teams, that’s inevitable, but I’m supremely confident we can do it.

“As a group, we’ve had a few meetings now and the main preparation starts in a few weeks when we take on the Combined Nations All Stars at Warrington. That will be the main bulk of the preparation but so far, so good.”

Sam Tomkins on being England captain

Tomkins admitted that this World Cup is likely to be his last as a player.

As someone who has won Super League Grand Finals, Challenge Cup, League Leaders’ Shields and a Man of Steel award, the World Cup is one of the only major trophies that has escaped Tomkins.

The Catalans Dragons star says it will be a privilege if he gets to captain England at the World Cup.

He added: “It is a huge honour. It will be last World Cup, I don’t think my knees will get to the next one!

“It is a massive honour and any player who can represent their country – it is the biggest honour of playing rugby league. I’m excited and hopefully I can get my name in the hat for it.”
