You may have found the last few months of winter lockdown have taken their toll on your complexion, beauty regime and sleep pattern. Well, that has certainly been the case for for me.

There are times when brushing my hair is too much to ask for and I have given up on concealer to hide the multiple shades of purple under my eyes – thanks to many a sleepless night, which no caffeine-free day and early night can fix.

But one small blessing has come out of lockdown and my love of scrolling online retailers, as I stumbled across the wonder product that is satin pillowcases.

Why we rate it

Firstly, I would like to point out I was sceptical about whether silk or satin pillowcases would really have any beauty benefits. I read many a review stating they would prevent wrinkles and creases on your face after a deep slumber, which I wasn't too sure about.

I couldn't justify spending an obscene amount of money on silk pillowcases (prices can go into the hundreds), which is when I found Bedsure Pillowcase Set Satin Pillowcases on Amazon.

My main reason for buying these was to try to heal my very damaged hair, which has become all the more brittle in lockdown, and, let's face it the creases on my face became all the more evident when I rolled out of bed on a Monday morning and straight into a Zoom conference.

After sleeping on the pillowcase for a week I am pleased to report it has not only succeeded on both promises, but also helped my sleep, which is an added bonus, and - in my books - makes these a triple threat.

Not only are the satin pillowcases soft and gentle on my hair and skin, (they don't leave any creases on my face after a deep sleep), but the soft touch of them is also enough to relax and send me off into a deep sleep (yes, the child in me still finds soft materials soothing).

The smooth surface of the satin pillowcase causes less friction than cotton, and does not absorb as much moisture, which allows hair and skin to retain its shine and shape.

They come in two sizes, standard and euro size, the latter is slightly smaller, although the size availability depends on your colour preference.

There are seven colours to choose from: classic white, soft grey, navy blue, teal, taupe, lilac and raspberry, to match many bedding colours.

The pillowcases have an envelope flap to easily slide your pillow into, and fold over to ensure it doesn't fall out. There is no button or zip fastening to make for an uncomfortable sleep, which I personally prefer.

The best part is the sets, which include two pillowcases, are on sale, and depending on the colour cost £7.99 or £6.99, reduced from £10.99.

What the reviews say

Don't just take my word for it, Amazon shoppers can't get enough of this purchase either, which has racked up over 21,000 glowing reviews on the online retailer.

  • "Bought these a while back and then some more as gifts. I am very happy with the items and the seller. These are quality satin pillows, very soft and shiny. I bought satin as they are better for skin and hair, after using them for almost a year I can tell you. 1) It’s much better for your hair, no frizz or hair breakage on the pillow. 2) My face is softer and there's no redness in the mornings."

  • "I wasn’t really sure how much of a difference they would make to my hair and skin. But I’m super impressed. When I wake up my hair is super smooth and not the usual dreadlocked birds' nest that I had been used to. I also wake up without those horrid creases you get in your face from where your face has been screwed up when burying your head into your pillow through the night."

  • "I've been looking for a silk pillowcase for a good while now but they are often really expensive and almost always white or perhaps ivory. When I saw these that were bright colours and a good price I took the plunge and bought one set. I got the teal and it is a lovely colour. I have noticed a real difference with my hair, it is far less knotty in the morning and more manageable."

  • "Wow! Literally can not believe how well these work. Went to bed with my hair wet last night - usually results in a lions mane! And woke to lovely smooth curls. Love it!"

  • "Excellent pillowcases, my hair has been incredible since swapping to these from cotton. Decreased split ends and is always shiny and soft, never wake up with tangles. I swear it's helped with my skin as well, it's much softer than it's ever been. I've recommend to everyone and my hairdresser can't believe the difference in my hair, she's now telling everyone too and has some herself."
