Scarlett Johansson becomes rare Oscar 'two-timer' after noms in two categories

Scarlett Johansson has landed herself among some rarified company in Hollywood history, after being nominated for two Oscars in the same year.

Johansson is up for Best Actress, for her performance in Noah Baumbach's critically acclaimed Netflix movie Marriage Story.

She's also up for Best Supporting Actress for Taika Waititi's Nazi satire Jojo Rabbit.

But this is a huge rarity, with only 11 other examples of it having occurred in Oscar history, and while no one has ever won both, plenty have taken home silverware on the night for one of their nominations.

Jessica Lange was nominated for Best Actress for Frances, and Best Supporting Actress for Tootsie in 1982, winning for the latter.

A decade later, Al Pacino won Best Actor for Scent of a Woman in 1992, but failed to convert his other nomination, for playing sales whizz Ricky Roma in Mamet's iconic Glengarry Glen Ross.

1993 saw two actresses being double nominated in the same year for the first time ever, when Emma Thompson and Holly Hunter went head to head for Best Actress, Thompson for Remains of the Day, and Hunter for The Piano.

Hunter won, but both stars were also up for Best Supporting Actress too; Thompson for In The Name Of The Father, and Hunter for The Firm (Hunter lost that gong to her own co-star in The Piano, Anna Paquin).

Jamie Foxx was also nominated twice in 2004, for Ray (which he won for playing R&B legend Ray Charles), and also for Michael Mann’s Collateral, opposite Tom Cruise.

Others in the gang have including Julianne Moore (for Far From Heaven and The Hours), Barry Fitzgerald in 1944 (for the same role in Going My Way – the rules were later changed) and the first ever being Fay Bainter in 1938, who was nominated for both White Banners and Jezebel.

Johansson has a good chance of converting Best Actress this year, with odds of 5/1 available with some bookies, but less likely for Best Supporting Actress, with, at best, odds of 10/1.

These are her first Oscar nominations, though she does have a BAFTA and a Tony.
