Rangers Fan View: The scattergun is being unloaded as Rangers are doing sensible transfer business

There is still a few weeks of this transfer window to go. However, the business that has been conducted by Mark Allen to date can only be described as sensible.

It’s said that football clubs live or die by their recruitment. It’s fair to say that the recruitment in this window has been more planned and thought out than the windows that Mark Warburton and Pedro Caixinha had in their spells at Rangers.

It appears that we are going for a British core supplemented with a few foreign players of quality. That kind of signing policy worked during Walter Smith’s second spell. I’m glad we are going down this route again.

It’s not only the nationality of the players is pleasing, but it’s also the fact we are bringing in players for positions that we lacked either quality, depth or both. For example, the signings of Jamie Murphy and Jason Cummings make perfect sense.

We had nothing on the left-hand side attacking-wise. Therefore, signing a left winger was the most sensible thing to do instead of continuing to try and shoehorn Josh Windass into that position, especially when everyone who has a working pair of eyes could see that he is of a useful weapon playing in the centre of the pitch.

And the Cummings signing was one that should have happened before Joe Garner; due to other circumstances, it didn’t. It was obvious that we needed a striker to help take the load off Morelos, especially as Herrera hasn’t cut it. Furthermore, Miller is out and coming to the end of his career and Hardie will never cut it. It’s only taken Mark Allen’s intervention and 18 months, but he’s here now and I hope we will get the best out of him after his disappointing spell at Nottingham Forest.

The profile of player we are targeting is not only good for the here and now – it’s good for the future as well. Hopefully, the transfer dealings will enable us to become better in terms of buying low, developing and selling players on at a higher price. Something that every Scottish club has to do to keep the wheels turning, as the likes of TV money and sponsorship money is dwarfed by the English Premier League.

With Allen having a big input into the window so far, he has to be given credit. It’s his first window since coming in and he has done a very good job so far. Not only with the profile of player but the quality he has been able to bring in too. We will never find out if things would have panned out differently had he been involved in the summer re-build. That, however, lies at the feet of the board for appointing a manager before they appointed the director of football.

It’s given me a sense excitement that the footballing department is finally acting like a proper footballing department should. It’s also taught me that sometimes the obvious transfer target may well be the best fit instead of the constant need to think outside the box.

One thing is for sure, Allen and co. will take the pat on the back for this window. However, the hard work will start in the summer. I am eagerly anticipating that window to see how he will build on the work he has managed to get done during this one.

For once, things are looking bright football-wise at Ibrox; it comes as no surprise that it’s as simple and obvious as letting the guy the board hired as their director of football do his job and everything else will fall into place.

Sensible, isn’t it? I hope we are able to continue in this vein going forward. If we can get the recruitment right, we won’t be far away from competing like we feel we should be.
